CPOE is an electronic entry process of instructions that are provided by medical practitioners to effectively treat their patients. The order entry is transmitted over a computer network to various departments within a hospital, such as pharmacy, laboratory, and radiology. CPOE reduces errors related to handwriting and also reduces the order completion time.

CPOE has various advantages over paper-based methods, such as decreased transcription and an easy delivery of decision support to physicians. Decision support can also be used in CPOE, which reduces the medication error rate, increases cost-effective ordering of medications, and tests clinical appropriateness.

The global CPOE market was valued at $999.9 million in 2014, growing at a CAGR of 6.6% during the forecast period from 2014 to 2019. With the rapid adoption of the IT technology in healthcare, for instance, the use of electronic health records (EHR) systems has boosted the adoption of CPOE on a global level. The integration of CPOE with other systems usually accounts for a third of the cost of implementation, thus increasingly becoming a part of the integrated platform for medication order management.
Although, the systems are expensive, incentives and mandates from government are expected to drive the adoption of these systems. The major barrier in the growth of this market is the need for large investments.

The Global CPOE Market report studies the major regions, such as North America, Europe, Asia, and Rest of the World (RoW).
North America held the largest share in the total global CPOE market, which was followed by Europe. The rising number of installations in North America is due the high adoption of advanced technology while a greater emphasis is laid on hospital automation.
