The global IT services market is expected to grow from over $950 billion in 2016 to over $1160 billion in 2020. Internet of Things (IoT) was one of the key drivers of the IT services market as of 2016. The Internet of Things is the network of physical objects like devices, vehicles, buildings and other items which are embedded with electronics, software, sensors and network connectivity that enables these objects to collect and exchange data and has numerous applications. For instance, Microsoft and Rolls–Royce have announced a partnership centering on future Rolls–Royce intelligent engines, which will integrate Microsoft Suite into its service solutions to expand its digital capabilities.
With more than 20 million internet users, Australia has an internet penetration rate of around 84%. In New Zealand, the internet penetration rate reached around 88%% in 2015 as the country has more than 4 million internet users. In 2016, New Zealand recorded a total of 3 million Facebook users while Australia recorded 15 million users. A study conducted by the World Internet Project (WIP) and Auckland University of Technology revealed that 70% of internet users in New Zealand spent 2 or more hours per day online, and 58% spend 3 or more hours. Australia’s social network users increased from 11.6 million in 2015 to 11.9 million in 2016, and is forecast to reach 12.5 million by 2019.
Australia and New Zealand are gradually taking steps towards digital transformation. The government of New Zealand launched the Government ICT Strategy and Action Plan to 2017 in June 2013 and revised it in 2015. It aims to ensure a dynamic technology environment and achieve an ICT-enabled public services system in the country. It lays down foundations and investment plans for government system -wide digitalization.
Hardware Support Services was the largest segment in the Oceania’s IT services market with around 53% share of the market. Software and BPO Services was the second largest segment in the Oceania’s IT services and software and bpo services market with around 40% share of the market. Cloud Services was the third largest segment in the Oceania’s IT services market with around 7% share of the market.
