Summary
Tourism is one of the important industries for the Sri Lankan economy, contributing over 8% to the country’s GDP every year. Strategically positioned at the crossroads of both western and eastern sea routes, the island nation continues to be a favorite destination when visiting South Asia. The country attracts tourists from across the globe; inbound tourist arrivals in the country reached over 856,000 in 2011. Inbound spending in the country increased from US$750 million in 2007 to US$1.3 billion in 2011, registering a CAGR of 140.6%. Foreign exchange receipts per tourist per day registered an annual growth of 8.4% to reach US$88 in 2010. The Asia-Pacific region and Europe remain the major source regions for inbound tourists in Sri Lanka, together accounting for over 85% of the total inbound visits in the review period. India continues to be the primary source market, accounting for around 20% of inbound traffic, followed by the UK and Germany with over 15% and 5% respectively. Leisure remained the main purpose of travel for inbound tourists in the review period, and accounted for 84.6% of the total visits in 2011.

• Sri Lanka is home to eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites. These include the ancient cities of Sigiriya, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa, the central highlands area which comprises the Hortons Plains National Park and Knuckles Conservation Forest, the Dutch Fort in Galle, the Sinharaja Forest Reserve, the Golden Temple of Dambulla, and the Temple of the Tooth in Kandy. Ancient monuments such as Adam’s Peak and several Hindu and Buddhist temples in Sri Lanka attract significant numbers of tourists traveling for pilgrimage every year.
