This week's Intelligence Briefing:
Impact of the Nigerian elections: Defence and security perspective
Thursday 4th June - 15:00 (UK) / 10:00 (New York)
Last month, Nigerians went to the polls to elect the first new government since the People's Democratic Party's (PDP) rise to power in 1999. The new government of President-elect Muhammadu Buhari inherits a country beset by political turmoil and insecurity, including crumbling infrastructure, spiraling oil prices, a Boko Haram insurgency in the north and a potential resurgence of militancy in the oil-producing Niger Delta.
This briefing will focus on the defence and security aspects of the political transition, as well as Nigeria's current military capabilities and its nascent domestic defence industry. Specifically, IHS experts will cover:
- The political transition and any expected changes in defence policy.
- The current state of Nigeria's campaign against Boko Haram in the north-east, including a snapshot of the country's military capabilities.
- The latest Nigerian defence budget, released in April 2015, and its implications.
- Nigeria's defence industry and procurement trends
Speakers include: Sebastian Boe, Senior Armed Forces Analyst, Africa; Charles Forrester, Senior Industry Research Analyst, IHS Jane's Defence Industry; and Fenella McGerty, Senior Analyst, IHS Jane's Defence Budgets; and Reed Foster, Head of Military Capabilities Desk, IHS AD&S.
