Thursday 15th October - 15:00 (UK) / 10:00 (New York)
Under the Abe administration, Japan's military relations with Asian countries have been strengthened and its defence export policy is being revised to facilitate military trade. As territorial disputes between China and its neighbours continue to simmer and Chinese military reach expands, Japan seems poised to fill the role of a regional security provider. Not only would Japan's expanded leadership in the security realm be in concert with the larger US engagement of Asia but would possibly be an attractive alternative for countries that remain wary of American military presence in the region. The question remains whether Japan is ready to undertake such a role.
This briefing will examine the modernisation of Japan's armed forces and the ability of Japan's defence industry to capitalise on potential military trade. Specifically, IHS experts will cover:
- The military capabilities of Japan's Self Defence Force and examine the direction of military modernisation
- A brief overview of Japanese military diplomacy in Asia
- Domestic political perspectives on Japan's defence policy
- Analysis of Japan's defence budget and spending
- Examine the state of Japan's defence industry
Speakers include: Peter Felstead, Editor, IHS Jane's Defence Weekly; Rukmani Gupta, Military Capabilities Analyst (Asia-Pacific), IHS Aerospace, Defence and Security; Alison Evans, Senior Analyst, IHS Economics and Country Risk; Craig Caffrey, Principal Analyst, IHS Jane's Defence Budgets; and Jon Grevatt, Defence Industry Analyst (Asia-Pacific), IHS Aerospace, Defence and Security.
